CORAL, Consortium on Education and Research on Advanced Laser Science is an organization that focuses on educating young students who want to study optical science and photonics through graduate school education program, and was established in April 2007 organized by faculty members from the University of Tokyo.
Optical science and photonics and their applied research continue to make remarkable progress against the backdrop of advances in cutting-edge technology over the years all over the world, especially in laser technologies, nanophotonics, biophotonics, and molecular spectroscopy. Research results in optical science and photonics are deeply contributing to the enrichment of human society. Japanese research infrastructure has been leading the world from basic science to industrial fields, and in 2005, Science Council of Japan released statement on the importance of optical science and photonics telling “Strengthening optical science research and its countermeasures that contribute to the creation of new fields.”
In light of this situation, it is very important for us as Japanese researcher to take advantage of the results it has cultivated to date and work systematically to develop the next generation of young human resources who will play an active role internationally in the field of cutting-edge optical science and photonics. The most important challenge is to build an educational program that allows young human resources to systematically acquire the knowledge and skills needed at the forefront of today’s cutting-edge optical science and photonics. We systematically rebuild the curriculum of graduate school education, which has traditionally been decentralized, in close collaboration with cutting-edge research.
